A solution to a difficult situation.
Or simply clarity about what to do next.
One of the clearest biblical references is Revelation 3:8, where Jesus tells the church in Philadelphia that He has placed before them an open door that no one can shut.

An open door is not automatically the same thing as an attractive opportunity.
Something can look profitable and still be wrong for you.

A Personal Lesson I Have Learned About Open Doors
Through my years of ministry, prayer, Bible teaching, and conversations with people facing difficult seasons, I have noticed something repeatedly:
Many people are praying for an opportunity when what they really need is both an opportunity and the wisdom to handle it.
I have seen people become discouraged because an expected opportunity did not happen.
I have also seen people become excited about an opportunity simply because it looked like an answer to prayer—only to discover later that they had not considered the responsibilities attached to it.
That has taught me to pray differently.
I don’t only ask God to open doors.
I ask Him to help me recognize the right door, prepare for it, and have the wisdom to walk through it responsibly.
This is especially important in practical situations.
For example, if someone is praying for a better job, prayer should not replace improving a résumé, developing skills, preparing for interviews, networking wisely, and applying consistently.
If someone is praying for business growth, prayer should not replace improving the product, understanding customers, managing money carefully, and learning from mistakes.
Faith and responsible action can work together.
Colossians 4:2–4 is particularly interesting because Paul asks believers to pray for an open door, while the surrounding passage also speaks about walking wisely and making the most of opportunities.

How Do You Know If an Opportunity Is the Right Door?
This is where I believe many prayer articles stop too soon.
They tell you to pray for an open door.
But what happens when three doors open at once?
How do you decide?
Here are five questions I recommend asking.
1. Does this opportunity require me to compromise my values?
If accepting the opportunity requires dishonesty, exploitation, or behavior you know is wrong, don’t call compromise a blessing simply because money is involved.
2. Am I prepared for the responsibility?
An opportunity can be good and still be premature.
Sometimes the answer to your prayer is not immediate access but preparation.
3. Have I considered the consequences?
Ask what the opportunity will require from your time, finances, family, health, relationships, and responsibilities.
4. Have I sought wise counsel?
Important decisions do not always need to be made alone.
Proverbs repeatedly presents wisdom and counsel as valuable.
5. Can I move forward with a clear conscience?
Peace is not the only test, but neither should you ignore persistent concerns that arise from facts, wisdom, or sound counsel.
What Should You Do While Waiting for an Open Door?
This may be the most practical part of this entire article.
Don’t make waiting an excuse for inactivity.
If you are praying for a job, improve your résumé and interview skills.
If you are praying for clients, improve your service and communicate your value.
If you are praying for business growth, learn more about your customers.
If you are praying for a promotion, become more effective at your current responsibility.
If you are praying for a ministry opportunity, develop your biblical knowledge and character.
If you are praying for financial improvement, examine your spending and financial habits.
If you are praying for a new beginning, start preparing emotionally and practically for what that beginning may require.
